While law enforcement authorities are investigating why Miriam Carey, a 34-year-old Connecticut woman, tried to breach a barrier at the White House, setting off a high-speed car chase that put the Capitol on lockdown and ended with her being shot dead by police, the media has, as usual, began it spin its own factually suspicious story to fit the narrative.
On radio this morning, Glenn, Pat, and Stu decided to get in on the action – assuming the identities of Bill, Pete, and Bob and delivering their own poorly fact-checked report of the incident.
“We have to go to the breaking news that's not so breaking of the unarmed mother who was shot and killed by the brave men and women of the Capitol Police that are not being paid because of the racist hate mongering Republicans like Ted Cruz,” Glenn (aka Bob) said. “Now sure, we'd like to tell you that this was some rightwing extremist but, no, instead it was a woman who was suffering from a medical condition. We'd like to be able to tell you that it was a medical condition that she couldn't get healthcare for, but she had all that going for her. She's been in the hospital. So we can't even tell you that.”
“But she was an unarmed woman, and we shouldn't probably continue to harp on that because it was an unarmed woman that police gunned down. She was a black woman, and the police just gunned her down in the streets Of course, we shouldn't probably harp on that because – well, I don't know why, but it doesn't fit into the story lines that we like to tell,” he continued. “If she were white, we'd be pounding, just pounding another white rightwing extremist, somebody probably who hated the president. But this one loved the president. In fact, loved the president so much, she thought the president was stalking her. So we don't want to say that she was a Democrat and she loved the president. Why was she there than trying to kill somebody? We're not really sure. But the brave men and women that shot this unarmed African‑American mother are not being paid today. Bill. Bill, are you with me? Bill? They are not being paid today.”
“Not being paid at all,” Pat (aka Bill) added. “Thanks to the evil white Republicans.”
While this conversation sounds like a ridiculous parody, the reporting is not all that different than the legitimate ‘news’ report Pat dug up from yesterday.
REPORTER: The police and ones from the Secret Service were injured in the chase. Those brave men and women of the capitol police who stopped this threat are not being paid. They are not going to see their money until this government shutdown ends.
So where is the typical reporting we hear during a case like this. The media has jumped on the bandwagon of blaming Republicans for the government shutdown, but where is the coverage of the fact that this African American woman was unarmed when police gunned her down?
Glenn defended the actions of the police because, in his mind, a car driving at 80 MPH is just as dangerous as any firearm.
“I mean, let me stick up for the police here for just a second and then I'm going to continually bash the media for what they're doing here. I'm not going to second guess the police. I mean, she led them on a 9 minute chase around the Capitol,” Glenn said. “A car used in that fashion is a dangerous weapon. It is more dangerous than a gun. If she had a pistol in there or an AK‑47, they don't know. They have no idea. So I don't have a hard time with them shooting her. I wish they wouldn't have. I mean it would be nice if they wouldn't. But I mean, let's not go down the road of questioning our cops if they discharge their weapon in a situation like that… We didn't know who she was or what she did. I have no problem that they shot her because of the 9 minutes of recklessness.”
“With that being said, the media is despicable, despicable on this. Where's the Trayvon crowd? Where's the old ‘poor mother’, ‘innocent African‑American woman,’” Glenn asked. “Where's all that? If this were anybody else, if this was a white guy, they would be talking about party affiliation right now. Right now.”
